JUAREZ.- Juárez waited for 19 years to once again give a warm and enthusiastic welcome to Mexican singer Luis Miguel. And he didn't disappoint Tuesday night.
In a well-planned show, with no improvisations and no room for mistakes, Luis Miguel took his public on a musical journey that went from his latest hits to his unique interpretation of the romantic ballads and the songs that launched him to fame in the early '80s. The journey included mariachi music as well as a tribute to American singer Frank Sinatra.
At 9:51 p.m., Luis Miguel appeared at the Benito Juarez Olympic Stadium stage wearing a classic black suit with a white shirt. The stadium was at three quarters of its capacity and the public, composed mostly by women of all ages, started shouting as he opened the concert with "Mujer de Fuego," part of his 2010 album, followed by "Suave," which was sung in unison for most of the attendees.
Sitting a few meters away from the stage in the first row, were Chihuahua Gov. Cesar Duarte Jaquez and Juárez Mayor Hector "Teto" Murguia. Outside of the stadium, dozens of police cars were patrolling the area, while vendors tried to make some money from the concert either selling Luis Miguel photos and T-shirts, or food, water and candies.
"Good evening, Ciudad Juárez," greeted Luis Miguel after the first five songs. "It is a pleasure to be with you again. I hope you have a great night today," he said before going to his selection of boleros, which included "Contigo en la Distancia," "Se te olvida," "No sé tu," "La Gloria eres tu," and "Bésame mucho."
Luis Miguel, 41, has an austere performance style nowadays. He doesn't dance, he barely jumps and the most that he does is play an imaginary electric guitar with his fingers when singing. On Tuesday, his interaction with the public was limited to shaking some hands and throwing some white flowers to the public. He asked the public twice how they were doing.
After a less than one-minute first break, Luis Miguel paid a tribute to Frank Sinatra, singing "Come Fly With Me," a song that he recorded in a duet with the American singer in 1993. The voice and images of Sinatra displayed on the big screen gave a nostalgic flavor to the night.
The concert mood was escalating as the crowd got ready for the appearance of the mariachis and songs by José Alfredo Jimenez. When Luis Miguel started to sing "El Rey," the entire stadium sang with him. And the reaction was the same with "La Vikina," "De que manera te olvido," and "Si nos dejan."
At 11:34 p.m., when more than half the concert was over, Luis Miguel went back to the hits that made him famous 30 years ago, at the beginning of his career. And women of three different generations shouted at him, cried and danced at the rhythm of "Isabel," "Si no supiste amar," and "Cuando calienta el sol."
Sonia Salgado, a Juárez resident, saw Luis Miguel in 1993, when he performed in the same stadium. She remembers him wearing a yellow shirt and leather pants, a very different image than the one she saw Tuesday.
"I'm very excited to see him again," Salgado said. She came to the concert with seven members of her family, all of them women of different ages.
Silvia Chacon traveled from the city of Chihuahua to see Luis Miguel for 10th time in her life. She said she would follow her idol to wherever she could.
"This concert was incredible. I'm so happy that I came," she said.
Claudia Moreno was excited about the amount of people that showed up to the concert.
"Luis Miguel is proof that our city has changed," she said. "Seeing him here, seeing the amount of people that came, is proof that things have changed a lot."
